Our History

Over a century of brotherhood at Akron

Beta Lambda's roots predate its installation as a Theta Chi chapter by 21 years. The chapter traces its origins to Chi Theta Tau, a local fraternity founded at the University of Akron on January 21, 1921 — giving it one of the longest continuous histories of any organization on campus.

Chapter Timeline

From local roots to national recognition

Beta Lambda's story spans more than 100 years, two distinct eras, and over 1,200 initiated brothers. It is a chapter that has been rebuilt, recognized, and continued to grow.

January 21, 1921

Chi Theta Tau is founded as a local fraternity at the University of Akron — one of the earliest fraternities established on campus. The organization builds a strong local identity over the next two decades.

February 21, 1942

After 21 years as an independent organization, Chi Theta Tau petitions Theta Chi Fraternity and is accepted. The chapter is formally installed as Beta Lambda. Membership grows quickly to over 100 active brothers, and Theta Chi becomes one of the most prominent fraternities at Akron.

1942 – 1970s

Post-war growth brings Beta Lambda to peak membership. The chapter is recognized as one of the elite organizations on campus, with a strong presence in leadership, campus life, and the broader Akron community.

1994

The chapter closes after a period of declining membership, shaped in part by the university's shift toward a commuter-heavy student body in the 1980s and early 1990s.

April 4, 1997

Beta Lambda is recolonized and officially reinstalled as an active Theta Chi chapter. A new generation of brothers begins the work of rebuilding the chapter's culture, membership, and campus presence.

2020

At Theta Chi Fraternity's 165th Anniversary Celebration in Lexington, Kentucky, Beta Lambda is named the recipient of the Grand Chapter Scholarship Award — one of the national organization's highest academic honors. The award recognizes the chapter's commitment to academic excellence among its brothers.

February 21, 2026

Beta Lambda celebrates its 84th Local Founders Day, marking 84 years since the chapter's installation as a Theta Chi chapter. Active brothers and alumni gather to honor the chapter's history, share stories across generations, and recommit to what Beta Lambda is building.
