FAQ

Common questions about joining Beta Lambda

These are the questions people usually want answered before they make a serious decision. Fair enough. Blind commitment is for cults and bad subscriptions.

What is the new-member period like?

Theta Chi's new-member education period (The Resolute Journey) is designed as an eight-week process focused on the history, traditions, and ideals of the fraternity. It also helps new members build real relationships with one another, active brothers, and alumni while developing leadership, academic excellence, moral conduct, and personal growth. The Resolute Journey is the first step of our membership experience to give our brothers the distinction of The Resolute Man. This is the Fraternity's education efforts for chapter Marshals.

Our elected Marshal leads new-member education at Beta Lambda, backed by years of development and support from Theta Chi International Headquarters. Through ongoing officer training and the annual Marshals Summit each January, the Fraternity invests in preparing new-member educators to lead with purpose, consistency, and high standards.

The goal of the new-member period is not to waste time or manufacture drama. It is to prepare men for full membership, meaningful involvement in the chapter, academic and career skills, and a lifelong commitment to the values of Theta Chi.

What about hazing?

Theta Chi has a strict anti-hazing policy, and Beta Lambda should reflect that clearly. Hazing is not brotherhood, not tradition, and not something to tolerate quietly.

If there is ever a concern related to hazing, Theta Chi lists its Anti-Hazing Hotline as 855-824-4840, and the Interfraternal Anti-Hazing Hotline as 888-NOT-HAZE.

What does Theta Chi actually do for members?

Membership opens the door to personal growth, leadership opportunities, chapter involvement, alumni connections, and a broader national network. At the chapter level, it should also mean genuine friendship, local service, and a stronger college experience.

The point is not just to join something. It is to become part of a brotherhood that keeps developing you during college and long after graduation.

What costs are involved?

Fraternities usually involve both national and local costs. At Theta Chi, new members pay a one-time fee tied to new-member and initiation costs. As an initiated brother, you are expected to pay dues once each semester. Our chapter understands that money can be tight while in college and look to support and be flexible with our brothers who express financial difficulty.

Dues are adjusted each semester to account for inflation and chapter needs. For additional questions, please connect with the chapter president or treasurer.

What role do parents and families play?

Joining a fraternity is a meaningful decision, and families often want to know whether the chapter is healthy, serious, and worth trusting. Support matters most when it helps a student ask good questions and make an informed choice rather than rushing into something blindly.

Families should expect honest communication about dues, expectations, safety, academics, and the kind of culture the chapter is trying to build.

Is there a GPA requirement?

Yes. Beta Lambda requires a minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.7 to join as a new member. For incoming freshmen, a high school GPA of 3.0 is required.

Academic accountability does not stop at initiation. Beta Lambda earned Theta Chi's national Grand Chapter Scholarship Award in 2020 — scholarship is something this chapter takes seriously, and members are expected to maintain standing and seek support from the chapter when they need it.

What kind of student is Beta Lambda looking for?

The chapter should be looking for men who are dependable, coachable, respectful, and willing to contribute. Not just guys who want the social label without the responsibility that is supposed to come with it.

A strong prospective member is someone who wants real brotherhood, can handle accountability, and is interested in leaving the chapter better than he found it.
